fog, rain, snow and storm. It is commonly measured as RVR (i.e. Runway Visual Range) or MOR (i.e. Meteorological Optical Range). MOR ranges from 10 to 10,000 meters. The Transmissometer is known as transmittance meter as it is an instrument which is used to measure transmission coefficient of light passing through atmosphere and hence determine RVR and/or MOR.

A pilot's view of Lisbon Airport 's runway 21 in fog; runway visual range is about 200 m (660 ft) In aviation, the runway visual range ( RVR) is the distance over which a pilot of an aircraft on the centreline of the runway can see the runway surface markings delineating the runway or identifying its centre line. RVR provides a runway specific visibility number. Instruments are mounted alongside the length of the runway, and the visibility is reported in terms of how many feet an observer could see down the runway if they were standing on the threshold. For an aircraft landing after an instrument approach, the RVR system has several benefits. Runway Visual Range (RVR) and Runway Visibility are two terms which have similar meanings. Both are used to indicate the visibility along the intended take off or landing path.

RVR is horizontal visual range, not slant visual range. In aviation, the runway visual range (RVR) is the distance over which a pilot of an aircraft on the centreline of the runway can see the runway surface markings delineating the runway or identifying its centre line. RVR is normally expressed in feet or meters.

Runway Visual Range (RVR)− An instrumen-. tally derived value, based on standard calibrations,. separate receivers at different distances — or two entirely separate transmissometers.
Example: R01L/0600V1000FT – Runway 1L (V) varies between 600 and 1,000 ft. M = RVR P = RVR > highest reportable value. Examples:
RVR is reported in either feet or meters. In the United States, you can assume it is in feet. This may seem like a no brainer, but RVR is only reported at airports with an RVR system installed.

Visibility is measured by either electronic devices or a tower guy just looking out the tower at the furthest distanced object measured and charted on a chart. While "flight visibility" is different than RVR (it's what you see out your windscreen), the RVR is going to give you a general idea of what you can expect to see at the end of your approach. And if the reported RVR is below what's on your approach chart, you're probably going to have a hard time landing from the approach.
